Marvin Menzies hired at UNLV

After losing new hire Chris Beard to Texas Tech despite Beard not ever coaching a single game for the Runnin’ Rebels, UNLV has opted to hire longtime New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies. The new hire was reported by Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

Menzies, who spent a season as a UNLV assistant under former coach Lon Kruger, has coached New Mexico State since 2007 and has gone 198-111 (103-37 WAC) with five trips to the NCAA Tournament and five WAC championships. He takes over a UNLV team that went 18-15 (8-10 MWC) last season and missed the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row.

Given how the Runnin’ Rebels need a makeover on defense and Menzies’ coaching philosophy stresses that highly, perhaps he could be the man to lead UNLV past the first round of the big dance for the first time since 2008.

Menzies himself has not yet addressed being hired, but stay tuned to Campus Sports for further updates!
