The New York Jets will host quarterback Brian Hoyer at their team facility in Florham Park, New Jersey today, according to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Caplan.
Hoyer was recently released by the Houston Texans, who he helped clinch the AFC South last season before throwing four interceptions in a 30-0 drubbing at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Wild Card Game. The Jets are indeed currently in the market for a quarterback as Ryan Fitzpatrick has yet to agree to a new contract, leaving coach Todd Bowles with only Geno Smith and second-year man Bryce Petty as his only options under center.
To be perfectly honest, Hoyer is not much of an upgrade over either man. He does not have a particularly strong arm, is more of a game manager above all else, and just how much of a fit he would be in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s spread offense is up for debate.
That all being said, at least from an outsider’s perspective, it looks like the Jets are simply doing their due diligence on Brian Hoyer and really just using his visit as a means of pressuring Fitzpatrick to sign a more team-friendly deal. The fact that the Harvard grad hasn’t even inked a contract with a new team yet makes a reunion practically inevitable.
