The Kansas Jayhawks’ football program was already in some hot water over a lawsuit surrounding a sexual assault accusation earlier this year, and the heat has now been turned up.
According to student newspaper The Kansan, another female student-athlete has filed a Title IX suit against the university, claiming she was sexually assaulted by a football player in an on-campus apartment last summer. Oddly enough, it is the same football player who is accused of assaulting former KU rower Daisy Tackett, who filed suit earlier this year.
This student, who has remained anonymous, is also a former rower and said that Kansas did nothing to assist her whatsoever.
“KU made me feel worthless,” the student said in a statement. “After I reported my assault, everything KU did made me feel like they were trying to get me to crack and leave. My rowing team coaches didn’t care, didn’t help, and they did not protect me. … How many women need to be victimized before KU will take action? I reported my assault, and KU turned my experience into a living a nightmare.”
“To protect the rights of all parties involved, the University of Kansas does not comment on individual sexual assault investigations,” a statement from a KU spokesman said. “When the university receives a report of sexual assault, we quickly take action to support the person who came forward and work to investigate and resolve the matter. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.”
That’s all well and good, but the fact that Kansas is now dealing with two lawsuits in which the same football player is accused is telling. Sexual assault committed by football players appears to be a rampant problem right now, with Tennessee and Baylor dealing with the after effects of such, and it is an issue that needs to be addressed.
Simply put, Kansas had better get ready because if you ask this writer, the dominoes are not done falling just yet.
