Though Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has the potential to be a star in new coach Adam Gase’s spread offense, he has made peace with the fact that Miami may still opt to draft a quarterback with the No. 13 pick.
“No, I wouldn’t be offended at all,” Tannehill said, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald. “That’s the nature of the business. If you’re not doing the job good enough then they’re looking to replace you. And you want to have depth. I love the guys in the room … I’m excited about the room we have and if we add somebody else, I’ll be open arms and welcome him in. We’re just there to push each other. Push each to be better and enjoy the whole process.”
It’s hard to say whether the Dolphins will indeed draft a quarterback with their pick, or engineer another trade so that they may. At No. 13, the only realistic option could be Memphis’ Paxton Lynch and even he seems like a reach at that point. Thus, with the top two prospects at the position in Carson Wentz and Jared Goff all but certain to be off the board when Miami picks, it’s safe to say that Tannehill is feeling good about his job security since any quarterback taken at that point wouldn’t be ready to contribute as a rookie.
But there’s no doubt that it’s put up or shut up time for the former Texas A&M Aggie. He completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 4,208 yards and 24 touchdowns last year, but also did not win favor with former coach Joe Philbin and has not been able to turn Miami into a contender.
Hopefully, with a quarterback guru in Gase now coaching the team, Tannehill can bring Miami football back with a vengeance in 2016.
