IOC cuts make NHL participation in 2018 Olympics more difficult

According to TSN, NHL participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics will be questionable due to cost concerns.

The International Olympic Committee has generally covered most expenses concerning travel, transportation, insurance, and accommodations for NHL players participating in the Olympics, however, it was recently announced that the IOC intends to cut the budget for these expenses. These costs total over $20 million and present as serious concern for the NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

“We had a meeting with the NHL last week and the prognosis is not really good. Our wish is to have the best players. [But the IOC] not covering the cost as they did at the last five Olympic Games puts us in a difficult financial situation,” said IIHF President René Fasel, via insidethegames.com.

Fasel also noted that most players would still like to participate in the Pyeongchang Olympics in two years, but this decision will make things more difficult for them.
