The New York Giants shored up some secondary help tonight with the No. 10 pick, but not without reaching for Ohio State corner Eli Apple.
Apple is definitely talented, but it’s definitely shocking that he was selected ahead of a more talented corner in former Florida Gator Vernon Hargreaves III. In two seasons with the Buckeyes, he recorded 86 tackles with four interceptions and 17 pass breakups.
But the long and short of it is that after finishing dead last in total defense last season, any defensive back will help the Giants. Apple figures to step into the spot left open by Prince Amukamara, who departed for the Jacksonville Jaguars via free agency, and the Giants also have Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to help out at cornerback.
Either way, though many will view this pick as a reach, as it is, Apple is talented and Giants fans should get excited.
