Former Illinois coaches, players save local shop

Jarling’s Custard Cup is a well-known shop to those who have spent any time in Champaign, Illinois. So when the business went up for sale over the weekend, it’s no surprise that a bunch of people jumped in to save the local staple.

What makes the story so incredible, however, is that some of people who stepped up for Jarling’s Custard Cup are former coaches and players for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

The investors included and former head basketball coach Bruce Weber, former football coach Ron Turner, and former Illini football players Kurt Kittner and Tony Pashos, according to a press release.

“We brought the highest quality products to Champaign some 33 years ago, and we have enjoyed incredible success, all at the same location with our customers always being the top priority. We went through an exhaustive sale process, and we couldn’t be more delighted with the people we found to carry on the Jarling’s Custard Cup tradition,” former owner Christy Jarling said.

Kudos to the former Illini coaches and athletes for contributing and helping the local favorite continue to stay up and running.

The local investor group will re-open the shop on May 7.
