The college football season is still months away, but that hasn’t stopped San Diego State Aztec offensive coordinator Jeff Horton from hyping up one of his most productive players.
Horton was discussing senior running back Donnel Pumphrey when he said his team’s offensive standout can be just as good as Stanford junior running back Christian McCaffrey, a Heisman Trophy favorite heading into the 2016 season.
“Look at how much [Pumphrey] carries the ball. He’s our leading receiver. The ball’s in his hands all the time. He can be as good as McCaffrey, I think,” Horton said, via USA Today Sports.
Pumphrey rushed for 1,653 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, while adding 27 catches for 414 yards and an additional three scores.
While Pumphrey may be a star for the San Diego State football program, he still has a long way to go before he belongs in the conversation with Christian McAffrey.
Of course, coaches are supposed to hype up their own players and give them confidence so we shouldn’t be surprised by Horton’s comments. And, who knows, surprises can happen in the sports world, so maybe Horton just sees something the rest of us haven’t yet.
