On Tuesday, sad news surfaced out of Columbus as former Ohio State Buckeyes captain Chico Nelson was found dead at age 46. On Wednesday, details began to emerge as The Columbus Dispatch reported Nelson’s death is being viewed as an apparent suicide.
According to the reports, Nelson shot himself in the chest.
“There were some good-bye text messages on his phone to those closest to him,” Grove City Police Det. Sgt. Chris White told the Columbus Dispatch. White added that the texts were sent immediately before Nelson’s death.
It is a very sad situation.
White also noted that this was likely not the first time Nelson attempted to take his own life, as evidence in his home suggested prior suicide attempts. An autopsy is taking place today.
Campus Sports continues to send its deepest condolences to the entire Nelson family during this difficult time.
