Nyquist, the horse that just won the Kentucky Derby and is looking to win the next leg of the Triple Crown at Preakness today, has a special group of people rooting for him. Detroit Red Wings right winger Gustav Nyquist, who the derby winner was named after, is rooting for the horse so they could possibly meet at Belmont in a few weeks.
The horse’s owner, J. Paul Reddam, is a Red Wings fan and his love for the team is pretty apparent. He named his four horses, including Nyquist, after the team’s star players: Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tartar, Petr Mrazek and Niklas Kronwall.
Nyquist is currently in Russia competing for Sweden in the World Championships so he hasn’t been able to watch the horse compete. He is hoping to see the horse win so he and the team can finally meet at The Belmont Stakes.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the horse and meeting the owner,” Nyquist said.
The third race takes place in Elmont, New York on June 11.
Let’s just hope Nyquist, the horse, can continue his undefeated streak towards history.
