Indy 500 results 2016: Alexander Rossi earns checkered flag despite late gamble on gas
The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 was a pretty successful race on Sunday afternoon. Alexander Rossi, a rookie from Nevada City, California, not only won the historic race, but he did so to notch his first career win.
The 24-year-old Rossi only led for the last few laps of the race and he was skating by on fumes as he crossed the finish line. He actually ran the last 36 laps on a single tank a fuel, a near record in any IndyCar race, and he let his team know with an emotional “I’m out of fuel, guys” as he raised his arm to the crowd.
It was a pretty back and forth race near the top of the leaderboard as J.R. Hildebrand, Tony Kaanan, Josef Newgarden, and Carlos Munoz fighting for the lead for most of race following a disastrous pit lane crash.
Alexander Rossi now holds the distinction of winning the 100th race and while coming back from 33rd at one point in the race. What a way to make a name in your rookie year of the sport.
