Report: Big 12 reconsidering ‘Baker Mayfield Rule’

The Big 12 Conference is already reconsidering a rule that was voted down which would have have allowed walk-ons to transfer within the conference without forfeiting a year of eligibility. The rule has been dubbed the “Baker Mayfield Rule,” as the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback transferred from Texas Tech after beginning his career with the Red Raiders as a walk-on.

According to ESPN’s Jake Trotter, the conference is already looking back and considering a restructuring of the language that would allow Big 12 officials to once again take a look at the rule.

“Sources said part of the new language being discussed would allow a walk-on’s school to offer a scholarship to keep him. If the walk-on then still elected to transfer within the conference, the player would face the league’s transfer eligibility restrictions,” Trotter wrote.

It is going to be interesting to see how this all continues to play out.

After all, if the rule was passed, Mayfield would earn an additional year of eligibility that would open the door for his return to the Sooners next season. Of course, Mayfield could also transfer or leave for the NFL Draft, so we will all have to stay tuned.
