Washington State QB Peyton Bender academically ineligible for 2016 season

The Washington State Cougars had a surprising 2015 season as they finished 9-4, narrowly missed making the PAC-12 Championship Game and won the Sun Bowl. They hope to even more this year, but they better hope starting quarterback Luke Falk performs well after Peyton Bender was ruled out for the 2016 season.

Bender was ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season and he will not be able to play this year. He will, however, stay in school at Washington State to work on his grades and hopes to return to the team next spring.

The Cougars now have to find a good backup for Falk, who missed some time near the end of the year with a concussion. JUCO transfer Anthony Gordon will join the team later this summer and inexperienced redshirt freshman Tyler Hilinski will likely hold down backup duties for now.

Peyton Bender was a three-star member of the Cougars’ 2014 recruiting class and he took a redshirt that year. Last year, he appeared in five games, throwing for 498 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions.
