Rory MacDonald likely needs surgery for broken nose

In his last two Octagon appearances, top welterweight contender Rory MacDonald has felt his nose shatter. With his nose breaking yet again, it is expected that the TriStar standout is likely to require surgery.

MacDonald suffered his most recent nasal fracture on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 89 during a loss to Stephen Thompson.

At the post-fight press conference, MacDonald revealed the struggles he has had with his nose and revealed surgery is needed.

“I broke it actually a couple times before this fight,” MacDonald said, as transcribed by Damon Martin of FOX Sports. “I have no idea. I gave it time, it kept breaking. I don’t know if surgery’s going to be the best route. I really just have to take time and at least I’d probably look into surgery, see if that can make it stronger because just time off didn’t do s—.

“My nose needs surgery. I’m going to need some time.”

After losing to Robbie Lawler last summer, MacDonald took a year off.

Now, he is likely headed to another lengthy layoff.

To make matters more interesting for MacDonald, his UFC contract expired after this weekend’s fight. And if the way negotiations have been playing out are any indication, his return to the cage will have to come in a promotion other than the UFC.
