A few weeks ago, MMA fighter Kimbo Slice, who gained his fame through backyard fights on YouTube before making an appearance in two fights with UFC, tragically passed away from heart failure. The combat sports world is still reeling from the news and Saturday night, the Ultimate Fighting Championship honored the fighter with a special tribute at UFC Fight Night 89.
The video chronicled his journey in his career, beginning with an appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights.” Slice was given that opportunity after having success in the now-defunct EliteXC.
Slice’s success in the UFC was short-lived as he only saw action in two fights. He defeated Houston Alexander at the finale of his season of “The Ultimate Fighter” and then later lost to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113.
Kimbo Slice most recently had match-ups with MMA legend Ken Shamrock and former bodyguard DaDa 500, both of which were in Bellator. He was slated to fight James Thompson in an EliteXC rematch at Bellator 158 before his untimely and unfortunate death.
Rest in peace, Kimbo.
