Three years ago, the NCAA decided to go a new direction in deciding a national champion at the FBS level of college football, abandoning the BCS for the College Football Playoff. When that happened, they created two groups of teams: the Power Five and the Group of Five, with the intention of the latter group being represented by the best team in the New Year’s Six bowl games.
It has been a successful run the first two years with Boise State and Houston both representing the lesser of the conferences very well with dominant performances in the bowl games. It will be very interesting to see which team could get that chance in the season.
Let’s take a look at five Group of Five teams to keep an eye on going into the 2016 college football season.
