Who will the Texas Longhorns starting quarterback be for the 2016 college football season? Well, if recent reports are to be believed, freshman Shane Buechele is the favorite to line up under center in the season-opener.
According to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News, Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong was asked about his signal-callers and whether he had one talented enough to lead the team to a Big 12 title.
While Strong stopped short of specifically naming a player, he did say that his quarterback was “going to be young.”
That comment was all reporters needed to draw the connection to Buechele, the four-star recruit who was rated as one of the top five dual-threat quarterbacks in his recruiting class.
Buechele, who impressed the coaching staff during the spring, is competing with senior Tyrone Swoopes and sophomore Jerrod Heard for the job.
There is no guarantee that the job will be his, but if he has another strong showing during the month of August, we could very well see a teenager leading the Longhorns onto the field for the big season-opener against Notre Dame on Sept. 4.
Talk about a tough test to begin your career.
