Jim Grobe, Baylor ready to move past offseason

The Baylor Bears have had a pretty awful run this offseason that resulted in head coach Art Briles and University President Ken Starr being terminated from the school. However, the Bears, now led by Jim Grobe, are looking to move past everything that happened this summer.

Grobe had retired after the 2013 season, his final with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, after Baylor fired Briles over the summer. He seems pretty excited to get things rolling on Thursday when they open preseason practice.

I can’t tell you how anxious I am to coach football,” Grobe said. “I’m excited to watch our players. I’ve been very impressed with the attitude and work ethic of our team. I can watch the (assistant) coaches coach, and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve admired their production on the field for a long time, and now I get to see them work and coach the kids.”

At the end of the 2015 season and going into the offseason, the Bears were expected to contend for the Big 12 and possibly a spot in the College Football Playoff. After the tumultuous summer they have had, which included them losing a handful of top recruits for their 2016 class, it is hard to say if this team will even finish bowl eligible in 2016.

Grobe admitted that he isn’t going to make a lot of changes as he wants the players to take the field with schemes they are already accustomed to.

“I’m not here to make a lot of changes,” Grobe said. “I thought that was really important for our players to have the same terminology, the same type of schemes as much as possible. But hopefully as we go forward if I do see things that I think might help us be a little better we might put a different spin on things.”

It is hard to believe this team won’t have difficulties throughout the 2016 season, but they are certainly going to be ready to take the field and forget about the past three months.

The Bears open the season on Sept. 2 when they host the Northwestern State Demons.
