On Wednesday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers announced they would be honoring late punter Sam Foltz throughout the 2016 college football season with a special helmet decal.
That isn’t the only honor Foltz will receive, however.
The university also announced it would be naming a scholarship in the honor of Foltz, who was set to be a senior this year.
The Sam Foltz Memorial Scholarship will be presented annually to a member of the football program who embodied Foltz’s traits of leadership, excellence in the community and in the classroom. The 2016 scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Huskers’ season opener against Fresno State on Sept. 3.
In addition to the scholarship and helmet decal, Nebraska will be renaming the Hero Leadership Award to the Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award.
Beginning with the 2017 Night at the Lied ceremony in April, the award will be presented to 27 student-athletes across all sports who exhibit strong leadership qualities, commitment to service and ability to encourage/empower peers. Foltz was one of the recipients of the 2016 Hero Leadership Award for his community outreach work.
It is great to see Foltz being remembered in such a positive way.
Foltz was tragically killed in a car accident last month along with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler. The Spartans are honoring Sadler by inducting him into the university’s Hall of Fame and also renaming a scholarship in his honor.
