Whoever has to take over the Cal Golden Bears’ offense this year will have a huge task replacing Jared Goff, who set multiple records during his career. However, Texas Tech and Colorado transfer Davis Webb looks to be the answer for the team this year.
The Golden Bears named Webb their starting quarterback for the 2016 season on Thursday. This wasn’t a huge surprise as he was expected to win the job the second he announced his transfer to Berkley.
He was named to the watch lists for the Maxwell Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which Goff won during the 2015 season. It should be fun to see what he can do this year.
“We felt like it was the right decision to make once separation occurred,” head coach Sonny Dykes said in a release. “Davis’ maturity and knowledge of what we’re trying to do put him a little bit ahead of our other quarterbacks. He’s new to our program but he came in with three seasons of experience at Texas Tech running this style of offense. We wanted to work out the details of our offense and put all the pieces together, and the quarterback is a pretty important part of that.”
During his career at Texas Tech, Webb recorded 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns before being ousted as the starter by Patrick Mahomes in 2015. The Golden Bears open the 2016 season on Aug. 26 when they face off against Hawaii in Sydney, Australia.
