The Los Angeles Rams drafted quarterback Jared Goff with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t mean he is the clear starter for the team.
In fact, it certainly seems like Case Keenum will go into the season as the No. 1 guy for Jeff Fisher’s team.
Keenum was named the starter ahead of the Rams’ first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Despite Goff taking snaps with the first-team offense in practice and Fisher expressing his desire to get the rookie in the game with the first team this week, Keenum still seems to be the guy in Los Angeles.
Fisher spoke with ESPN on Wednesday and talked about the quarterback battle. He mentioned that Keenum is “still clearly ahead” of Goff right now so it will be interesting to see how this wraps up before the start of the season.
Keenum started the final five games of the 2015 season for the Rams and went 3-2 while throwing for 828 yards and four touchdowns in those games. It certainly seems like he could be ready to take over the reins for the team, but Goff is not going to let him blow right past him just yet.
The Rams open the season on Sept. 12 against the San Francisco 49ers.
