Georgia State agrees to buy Turner Field, converting to football stadium

With Mercedes Benz Stadium and Sun Trust Field opening next year, the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves will both have new home stadiums. However, it will leave the Georgia State football team, who played their home games in the Georgia Dome, without a home field.

That changed on Thursday when it was announced that the school will purchase Turner Field, former home of the Braves, in order to convert it into a football stadium.

Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed made the announcement that the purchase is for $30 million and would be finalized by the end of the year.

“Turner Field may no longer be a baseball field, but it will still be a field of dreams,” Reed said.

Not only will the stadium be converted to house the Panthers, who are entering their seventh season of collegiate football, but the city will also convert surrounding areas into a walkable district with shops in hopes to draw in more revenue in coming years.

This is a big step for the Panthers’ football program, who finished the 2015 season 6-6 and made their first bowl appearance in team history. It will be fun to see exactly what the renovations to the stadium will look like.
