Dan Voltz, Wisconsin starting center, retires

The Wisconsin Badgers received some bad news just ahead of the start of the 2016 college football season.

On Tuesday, starting center Dan Voltz announced his decision to retire from football due to injuries. However, Voltz reportedly plans to remain close to the program.

Voltz was one of the most experienced players on the roster and a veteran leader for the Badgers, so his absence in the lineup will be a difficult hole to fill. But since he plans on remaining close to the team, he could help smooth any transition.

Last season, Voltz made five starts to kickoff the year before it was ended prematurely due to a knee injury.

Wisconsin opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 against the LSU Tigers at Lambeau Field.
