The Virginia Cavaliers are looking to turn things around going into the 2016 season and it certainly seems like head coach Bronco Mendenhall will do something good for this team. They named their starting quarterback on Wednesday and it turned out to be East Carolina transfer Kurt Benkert.
Benkert has impressed Mendenhall a lot this summer and it certainly seems like they believe in him going into the season. He was named the starter over former starter Matt Johns, who is now listed as co-backup with Connor Brewer.
“I’ve really been impressed with how he’s moved the team,” Mendenhall said. “When I look at a quarterback, what I look first and foremost for is, ‘Do they move the team into the end zone?’ And Kurt has been the one who has consistently and can continue to be consistent in terms of moving our team regardless of the type and caliber of opponent we play. He’s a good decision-maker, has a very strong arm, and he has natural leadership skills.”
Benkert transferred to Virginia over the summer and he was eligible to play immediately after obtaining his degree earlier this year. He was the starter at East Carolina ahead of the 2015 season before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
This is a big deal for the Cavaliers and it certainly seems like he is going to help this team turn things around. Virginia open the season on Sept. 3 against Richmond.
