The Georgia Bulldogs started Greyson Lambert at quarterback for the season-opener against North Carolina, before turning to true freshman Jacob Eason for the team’s Week 2 match up against Nicholls State.
However, Eason apparently did not do enough for the job as the Bulldogs will enter Week 3 with the highly-touted recruit and Lambert listed as co-starters on the official depth chart. According to head coach Kirby Smart, the two signal-callers will compete this week during practice for the starting job.
“[The starter] be based on how practice goes. That’ll work itself out over the course of the week,” Smart said at his press conference on Monday. “Jacob made some mistakes but he also made some good plays.”
Eason threw for 204 yards, one touchdown and an interception in his first career start as UGA stumbled to a win over the lowly Colonels.
When Eason is in the game, the Georgia offense clearly opens up. However, the team is more efficient getting in and out of the huddle with Lambert leading the way and appear to have more chemistry as a unit.
In the long run, Eason is the guy for the Bulldogs, but Smart is not ready to completely move on from a veteran presence under center just yet.
