Marlins’ Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident at age 24

The Miami Marlins got some very sad news early Sunday morning when it was reported that 24-year-old pitcher Jose Fernandez had been killed in a tragic boating accident.

This tragic news comes on the heels of a 6-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves just hours before.

Jon Heyman, along with multiple other sources, confirmed the sad news Sunday morning. The team released a statement and have canceled the final game of their series with the Braves today due to the news.

During his short career in the MLB, Jose Fernandez proved he was a rising star for the Marlins. He won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2013 after he finished with a 2.19 ERA and a rookie-high 187 strikeouts.

He was also a two-time All-Star, making the team in 2013 and 2016. He had already recorded a career-high 253 strikeouts this year.

Campus Sports would like to send their condolences to the Marlins and the Fernandez family.
