The city of Charlotte has been in turmoil following the death of Keith Lamont Scott, who was shot and killed by a police officer last week. Protests erupted in the city for four straight days and on Sunday, Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton took the moment to make a powerful statement with his pre-game attire.
Newton wore a t-shirt with a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which read, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
The quote is just as relevant today as it was during the first civil rights movement.
Newton becomes just the latest professional athlete to speak out against social injustice and systemic racism in the country.
The conversation first gained public notoriety when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem in the preseason. He later explained why he is taking the stand and many have followed since.
With the death of Keith Scott hitting so close to home, it’s great to see Newton standing up and making a strong statement as his community attempts to recover from the difficult and trying time.
The Panthers and Vikings are set to kickoff at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
