The race to land Houston head coach Tom Herman is heating up, and a favorite may be emerging.
Despite initial reports that the Texas Longhorns would be a heavy favorite to land the Cougars leading man, Chip Towers of Horns Digest reported the LSU Tigers were close to naming Herman as their next head football coach.
Shortly after the initial report, Chris Low at ESPN confirmed the news.
Herman holds a 22-3 record with the Cougars and has never lost as an underdog while serving as the team’s head coach.
To make matters more interesting, Herman holds connections to LSU.
Not only is Houston’s current offensive coordinator Major Applewhite from Baton Rouge, Herman was college roommates with current LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. The connections could lead to an impressive staff coming together at LSU.
If the Tigers do finish a deal to land Herman, they will have replaced Les Miles with the hottest coaching candidate on the market.
For Texas, meanwhile, it would be an embarrassing swing and a miss.
