Texas football: Jon Gruden emerges as Longhorns coaching candidate

There is no surprise that Texas football coach Charlie Strong is on the hot seat entering this afternoon’s regular-season finale against TCU at home.

However, that hasn’t stopped the rumors from swirling that Strong could be on the outs and that Houston’s Tom Herman is the program’s top target. But what happens if the Longhorns miss out on the hottest coaching candidate on the market?

According to Clay Travis of FOX Sports, a new name has emerged as a candidate at Texas and it should be very familiar to football fans.

Enter ESPN’s Jon Gruden. Seriously.

Are y'all ready for this? Know whose name is back in the mix if Texas misses on Tom Herman? Jon Gruden. Really. #grumors

The 53-year-old Gruden has not coached since 2008, and he has since accepted a cozy job at ESPN calling Monday Night Football.

It may seem like a longshot, but it would certianly be interesting to see what would happen if the fiery Gruden accepted the job. One thing is for sure: we better all get our popcorn ready.

Texas and TCU are set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
