Iowa football: Matt VandeBerg granted medical redshirt

The Iowa football team could have its go-to wide receiver returning in 2017, after it was reported by the Des Moines Register on Wednesday that senior pass catcher Matt VandeBerg had a medical hardship waiver approved by the Big Ten.

VandeBerg suffered a broken foot in practice on Sept. 26 which prematurely ended his season.

Prior to the injury, VandeBerg was the Hawkeyes’ No. 1 receiver with 19 receptions for 284 yards and three touchdowns. His return will only help a lackluster Iowa offensive attack.

Throughout his career in Iowa City, VandeBerg has hauled in 98 catches for 1,243 yards and eight touchdowns.

The No. 21 Hawkeyes end their 2016 campaign on Monday, Jan. 2 against the No. 20 Florida gators in the Outback Bowl. Kickoff at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa is set for 1 p.m. ET on ABC.
