Patrick Mahomes has the physical tools to be a quarterback in the NFL. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Mahomes has a strong arm and can make most throws. However, coming from Texas Tech and playing in their Air Raid offense has inflated his numbers and made it difficult for evaluators to give a confident assessment of his NFL readiness.
While not everyone is totally sold, one NFC scout expressed his belief in Mahomes potential:
“He’s big and athletic with big-time arm talent,” the scout said.
The gunslinging Red Raider threw for an astonishing 11,000 yards and 92 touchdowns across three seasons for Texas Tech.
The NFL Draft Advisory Committee gave Mahomes a draft grade that puts him in or around the second round, though some believe he could slide into the first-round discussion.
Questions do exist about the transition from his college offense to the pro game. Even those who firmly believe in Mahomes ability see him as a long term project. The rewards could pay dividends for a team who needs a quarterback in a few years.
With Jimmy Garoppolo potentially on the move, and Tom Brady looking to have a few more years before he’s ready to retire, maybe the world champion Patriots will give him a look.
