American University sprinter Liam Purdy had quite the accomplishment over the weekend.
Purdy was running in the 800m at the 2017 Patriot League Championship when he lost his shoe midway through the race. That didn’t stop Purdy, though, as he went on to finish and win the championship with just one shoe.
“I couldn’t help but think this is going to be one remarkable story,” Purdy, who said a competitor stepped on his heel midway through the race, told the Washington Post. “I was like, ‘Let’s make that happen.’”
Here’s how the race finished:

Of course, while it was a great story, it came at a minor cost.
Purdy shared photos of his foot on social media following the race and, well, let’s just say “gross.”

I think he will be able to live with that minor flesh wound though as he proudly displays his Patriot League championship.
