March Madness 2017: Grant Hill Talks Lonzo Ball, Duke Loss

We’re through the first two rounds of the tournament. The Sweet 16 will begin on Thursday and by the end of the week, we’ll know the field for the Final Four. While we are on this short break, Turner Sports NCAA analyst and former Duke great Grant Hill took the time to address some of the hot topics around college hoops.
Naturally, Hill was hoping his Blue Devils were going to do a little bit better, and conceded that the mood in the locker room following the game was probably pretty glum.
Having been in the locker room with Coach K, Hill felt the finality of losing a game in the tournament tends to bring out a softer response than a mid-season loss.
Hill also addressed the “one-and-done” strategy that Coach K has lately seemed to fall in line with.

He raised a fair point in saying that it’s mostly the mentally of the super-talented college athletes these days, rather than something the university is doing. In fact, he suggested that if he, Christian Lattner, and Bobby Hurley were all playing at present-day Duke, they’d likely be forced to make a similar decision.

“He’s always recruited talent. He’s always recruited McDonald’s All Americans, and guys that were the best in their class. It just so happens now that guys are not staying necessarily for four years. Or even two or three years, for that matter. And I think that’s more indicative of the times that we’re in.”

Of course, any discussion on college basketball these days devolves into a discussion about Lonzo Ball’s outlandish father, LaVar Ball. Hill, who is part owner of the Atlanta Hawks, was confident that the actions of the father won’t be visited on the son. Lonzo Ball seems to be earning high marks from general managers around the league, according to Hill, and his father isn’t becoming a distraction the way many have suggested.
In a surprise choice, and an act of total transparency as a broadcaster, Hill chose North Carolina to finish on top at the end of the tournament.
