The Chicago Bears have been taking a lot of flak in the days following the 2017 NFL Draft.
Apart from the questionable trade with the San Francisco 49ers that moved them up one spot to select a player that wasn’t being targeted anyway, they’ve also alienated their biggest free agent acquisition this offseason.
According to a report on the Chicago Tribue, quarterback Mike Glennon, who signed a three-year, $45 million contract in free agency just months ago, had no idea that the Bears intended to draft a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick. What’s more, he was appearing in a promotional capacity for the team at Soldier Field when the announcement was made during the live event.
Glennon now finds himself in the same position he thought he’d left behind with Tampa Bay. He kept his seat nice and warm on the sidelines while Jameis Winston took reps with the first team and started on Sunday.
Despite the Bears brass and coach John Fox reaffirming the fact that it is still Mike Glennon’s team, the fact that needs affirmation at all, before he’s even stepped on the practice field for the Bears, sets a bad tone for his coming tenure.
Glennon is now a lame-duck quarterback. Despite being due $18.5 million this season, fans will be waiting for him to get the hook all season; they’ll want to see the new guy.
