The Auburn Tigers are hoping the hype that is building around quarterback Jarrett Stidham turns out to be true. If even half of it is, they will have a bonafide leader at the most important position.
On Wednesday, Cris Dishman, a former assistant who worked with Stidham while he was at Baylor spoke glowingly of him.
“We used to sit in our defensive meeting room at Baylor and be like ‘OK, we’ve got one right here. We’ve got something special at quarterback,'” Dishman said. “You knew he was going to a special-type player, so him being successful at Auburn doesn’t surprise me at all.”
“A taller Drew Brees.”
That’s high praise. According to Dishman, he would regularly see Stidham make NFL caliber throws during practice. His naturally ability, coupled with his vociferous work habits were reasons he won’t be surprised to see Stidham succeed at the highest level.
The sophomore quarterback adheres to a strict workout regimen and is constantly trying to find new ways to improve. According to Tigers offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey:
“He’s at the office, the facility all the time studying film. He’s obviously got physical tools, arm talent and all that. All of that stuff is great, but I think his work ethic is what puts him over the top.”
Now Stidham is at Auburn, and has done everything he needed to do to place himself at the top of the depth chart when the season rolls around. Throwing in the first half of the teams spring game, Stidham threw for 267 yards.
If Stidham comes as advertised when the season rolls around, Auburn might find themselves with the opportunity to beat Alabama for the first time since 2013.
