Tennessee Football: Chip Kelly Favored To Become Next Vols Head Coach

Tennessee football coach Butch Jones is off to a slow start this season as the head coach of the Volunteers.

The Georgia Bulldogs absolutely dismantled the Vols on Saturday, coasting to a 41-0 victory. As if the rumor mill wasn’t already in gear, the loss is now generating a name of possible replacements for Jones.

The name at the top of the list might surprise you: Chip Kelly, who hasn’t coached since he was fired by the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelly never had much success in the NFL, but he was among the best in the business at the collegiate level. One oddsmaker is giving him the edge as an early favorite to call the shots at Neyland Stadium before too long.

Who will be Head Coach of @Vol_Football to start the 2018-19 season?

Perhaps an even bigger surprise on the list is where Les Miles ranks. He is well below the likes of P.J. Fleck, who is in his first season with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Bob Stoops who left an Oklahoma team ready to compete for a National Championship.

It’s hard to believe he’d return to the FBS to undertake a rebuilding effort.

Other fun names on the list include Peyton Manning and Lane Kiffin, which are each being given the same long shot odds. Peyton is having too much fun with his retirement, and fans in Tennessee might be somewhat resistant to Lane Kiffin rolling into town again.
