Rebel the Black Bear will be no more beginning in 2018 when Ole Miss officially changes its mascot.
On Friday, Ole Miss Chancellor Dr. Jeff Vitter sent out a letter announcing the change, according to Magnolia State Live. Ole Miss’ new mascot will be the “Landshark,” which has been an unofficial nickname for the university’s athletic teams for nearly a decade.
The chane comes not long after the Ole Miss Associated Student Body voted in strong support of making the change.
Despite the different mascot, Ole Miss will remain the Rebels.
“…I want to state unequivocally that we are — and always will be — the Ole Miss Rebels. And I am asking all Rebels to unite around our new Landshark mascot,” Dr. Vitter said in the letter.
Ole Miss introduced Rebel the Black Bear in 2010 after retiring Colonel Reb. Now, the Rebels and their faithful fans will have a new mascot to welcome to the family.
The new mascot will be unveiled before the 2018 season.
