The James Madison football team is a powerhouse in the FCS ranks. The Dukes are off to an undefeated start this season, thanks in large part to running back Trai Sharp. But in the midst of a successful junior season at JMU, he received devastating news.
During a matchup against Norfolk State, a game in which Sharp accounted for two touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing, his father passed away. He got word of his fathers passing during the fourth quarter of the game, and teammates described the somber mood in the locker room despite the win.
That was only a few weeks ago in September of 2017, and now Trai Sharp is bravely talking openly about the day he lost his father.

It’s easy to imagine the comfort that playing football likely gives Trai Sharp now that his father is gone. His father taught him how to play, and being on the field is probably the time he feel closest to him now.
JMU has continued to play dominantly this season, winning their two games since beating Norfolk State that day. Sharp appears to have kicked himself into another gear as well, rushing for 185-yards on 36 carries against Delaware.
