Jay Ajayi is the latest player to be involved in a big name trade ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s NFL trade deadline.
After the San Francisco 49ers traded a second-round pick to the New England Patriots on Monday night to land what they hope will be the team’s franchise quarterback of the future in Jimmy Garoppolo, the Miami Dolphins shipped their starting running back to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ajayi has not had a productive year in South Beach, but he’s still a highly-talented player that solidifies the Eagles’ run game and adds a threat out of the backfield for star quarterback Carson Wentz.
Perhaps what is most surprising about the trade, however, is how little the Dolphins had to give to land Ajayi.
Ajayi, who is under contract through 2018 for less than $1 million and rushed for 1,272 yards a season ago, was traded to the Eagles for a fourth-round pick. Some believe head coach Adam Gase was trying to send a message.
Dolphins are trading RB Jay Ajayi to the Eagles for a fourth-round pick. And Adam Gase gets his message across to the locker room.

But what was the message Gase was trying to send? This fan might be on to something.
Yup. The message is if you play selfishly and ignore your coaches, you can get traded to a better team. Message received. 🙄

This season, Ajayi has rushed for just 465 yards and has not found the endzone. Throughout his career, the former Boise State star has rushed 447 times for 1,924 yards and nine touchdowns.
