Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield put together an impressive 2017 campaign, racking up 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions through the air en route to claiming the Heisman Trophy.
Now, Mayfield is turning his attention towards the 2018 NFL Draft where he is expected to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board.
Mayfield trails the likes of UCLA’s Josh Rosen and USC’s Sam Darnold on most draft boards, but he remains a projected first-round pick. The biggest question for Mayfield seems to be his size and brash attitude.
There’s no denying his skillset on the field, but there are thing that have raised red flags for the star signal-caller.
So who do NFL teams compare Mayfield to at the next level?
As you would expect, most of the comparisons are to “undersized” quarterbacks who have passed through the league, with only one still currently employed.
Out of five NFL executives polled by NFL.com, the most common comparison was former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.
“He’s similar to Manziel. They have a similar gunslinger/backyard style of play. He’s not the same athlete as Johnny, but he’s got better arm strength and accuracy from the pocket,” one unnamed executive said.
Another views Mayfield as a Chase Daniels type, saying, “Ultra-competitive, average size/arm, good feet. Both guys know how to win and make big plays in big moments.”
Then, there’s the Colt McCoy comparison: “He reminds me a little of Colt McCoy, but Baker has more of an edge to him.”
While Manziel, Daniels and McCoy failed to ever find their footing in the NFL, there is one executive who believes Mayfield has what it takes to be a star. The executive went as far as to compare Mayfield to Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson.
“I see a lot of the same things I saw in Russell Wilson. Similar size, mobility, arm strength and play-making skills,” he said.
It’s interesting to see how Mayfield comparisons are all over the place as we approach the heart of NFL Draft season. Mayfield will have the ability to improve his draft stock at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama later this month, before heading to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine and interviewing with teams.
Mayfield has the natural talent and the competitiveness to succeed, we will just have to wait and see if he can put it all together.
