Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler is headed for a lengthy layoff.
According to UFC president Dana White, Lawler suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in the middle of his UFC on FOX 26 main event bout against Rafael dos Anjos.
Lawler reportedly suffered the injury in Round 3, but managed to make it to the end of the fifth round.
“He blew his ACL, meniscus and every other thing that’s in your knee out in like the third round,” White told Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole. “Wobbled over to the fence, laid against it and asked Dos Anjos to come in so they could just bang it out. Robbie Lawler went to the fifth round.”
Lawler is expected to undergo surgery to repair his knee in the coming weeks.
Following the loss, Lawler dropped to No. 4 in the welterweight division, while dos Anjos jumped to No. 2 behind Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Current champion Tyron Woodley is recovering from shoulder surgery, so there is no word on when the next 170-pound title fight will take place and his Woodley’s opponent will be.
