Saquon Barkley has been slated as a potential top-five pick, and with the Cleveland Browns holding two of the first five selection’s in this year’s NFL Draft, there is some speculation that the former Penn State Nittany Lions star running back could make his way to Cleveland.
However, reports indicate his agent does not want that to happen.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated‘s Ben Baskin, Barkley’s agent would prefer his client lands with either the New York Giants or New York Jets.
Barkley is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports.
From the report:
“His Roc Nation handlers, however, don’t want him to be taken No. 1. They don’t want him in Cleveland. They want him to go second to the Giants and play in the media capital of the world. That’s where you can become the Face of the League. His manager even implored him to pull an Eli Manning and demand that the Browns not draft him. Barkley never considered the option. Sure, he likes the idea of being back in the city of his birth–even playing for the Jets, the team he grew up rooting for. And of course he’s heard countless people tell him that if he ends up in Cleveland, his career will be ruined.”
Ouch, that has to sting for Browns fans.
There has long been a feeling that Cleveland is where players go to watch their careers die, but the Browns are hoping to turn things around beginning in 2018. There are already some strong pieces on the roster, and Barkley would be another strong addition whether he wants to be there or not.
