The Air Force football program has unveiled their special Air Power Legacy Series alternate uniforms for the upcoming season. The unique uniforms introduce special helmets to the mix, with one side of the helmet featuring a portrait of a plane with a badge on the opposite side of the helmet and “Spooky” word print across the back bumper.
This year, the Air Power Legacy Series pay tribute to the AC-130U Spooky.
There are currently 17 AC-130U Spooky aircrafts in service. In 1997, the aircraft set a new record for the longest sustained flight by any C-130 when two of the gunships flew 36 hours nonstop from Hurlburt Field in Florida to Taegu Air Base in Daegu, South Korea. The gunships were refueled seven times in the air by KC-135 tankers.
Last year, the Air Power Legacy Series honored the F-35 Lightning II, which the helmets modeled after the helmet that F-35 pilots wear in flight. There were five designs for the helmet with different squadrons represented across the five helmets. There is currently no word on how many squadrons will be represented on the Air Power Legacy Series helmets this season.
