The Netflix show Last Chance U has been a hit as the crew follows a junior college football team. Independence Community College has been the location of the last two seasons, but the school is looking for a new head coach after Jason Brown resigned in February. According to KOAM, the Kansas community college has hired a new head coach.
Associate head coach Kiyoshi Harris was promoted to the head job. He had been serving as the team’s interim head coach after Brown resigned. Harris had worked under Brown as the Recruiting Coordinator and Offensive Line coach, giving him a good knowledge of the team for next season.
His stint at Independence might be his first head coaching job, but Harris is an experienced coach on the collegiate level. He has 16 years of experience coaching offensive line at the college level, including 12 at California junior colleges. Harris worked at Chaffey Community College for 10 years, holding positions as the Offensive Coordinator, Run Game Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator.
Independence is very happy in its selection of Harris to be the Pirates’ next head coach.
“Coach Harris is the best choice to continue to provide the level of performance we expect of the Pirates,” said ICC President Daniel Barwick. “He is a person of experience, integrity and enthusiasm for the game.”
Harris is excited about the new opportunity and is looking forward to leading Independence next season. “I am honored at this prestigious opportunity to work with a great staff and mentor a group of talented young men,” Harris said. “Independence Community College is a wonderful institution that prepares students to be intelligent and productive members of society. As a team, we will move forward and build a powerful program that will continue to compete in the elite Jayhawk Conference.”
Harris’ success as head coach at Independence Community College is yet to be seen, but it could be seen on Last Chance U on Netflix.
