The Cleveland Browns finally released quarterback Johnny Manziel on Friday morning, leaving the team in need of a signal-caller that could emerge as the quarterback of the future moving forward.
For the Browns, it appears as though San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is the apple of their eye.
In fact, Cleveland is interested in Kaepernick enough that they are considering a trade but they are currently below the 49ers’ second-round asking price. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns will pull the trigger on the deal for a third-round pick and if Kaepernick agrees to a pay cut.
Unfortunately for the Browns, Kaepernick is set to make $11.9 million guaranteed in 2016 if he is still on the 49ers roster on April 1. So while the 49ers may be open to accepting the third-rounder, Kaepernick may not want to slice his pay.
So while the Browns and Kaepernick do have mutual interest, it may be smart for both parties involved if they put trade talks on hold and wait to see if San Francisco ultimately decides to cut the second-round pick.
