Robert Griffin III signs with Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have finally done the seemingly inevitable and signed quarterback Robert Griffin III, according to a statement on the Browns’ official website.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Dawg Pound and help build something here in Cleveland,” Griffin said. “Coach Hue [Jackson] and Pep [Hamilton], I had a great meeting with them. I really believe in what they preach and how they can help not only me as a player but this team win games and that’s what we’re all about.”

Griffin arrives in Cleveland after spending the first four years of his career with the Washington Redskins, who drafted him second overall out of Baylor in 2012. He showed prowess as a dual-threat quarterback as a rookie and even was named Offensive Rookie of the Year, but tore knee ligaments in Washington’s playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks that same season and has not had the same mobility ever since. Moreover, Griffin’s struggles as a pocket passer the three subsequent years ultimately relegated him to the bench while Kirk Cousins became Washington’s starter.

And there isn’t even a guarantee that Griffin will start in Cleveland. The Browns own the No. 2 overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft and Hue Jackson has stated that finding Cleveland’s quarterback of the future is top priority.

That said, perhaps Robert Griffin III is just a bridge quarterback until a rookie can develop? Maybe they’re actually serious about him starting long-term? He’s only signed for two years, so the answer is anybody’s guess.
