Jacob Eason running third team for Georgia

One thing every college football fan in the southeast thought would happen almost immediately is that five-star freshman quarterback Jacob Eason would be thrown into the starting role with the Georgia Bulldogs. However, new head coach Kirby Smart seems to be doing things differently and he is going to make Eason earn his job.

During the team’s scrimmage on Saturday, Smart noted that Eason looked impressive, but it was against the third-string defense. He said that Eason is talented, but his youth is going to be what holds him back at the start.

“Right now, obviously the young man has a great arm talent. But sometimes arm talent can get you in trouble if you make poor decisions,” Smart told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re trying to make sure he’s doing the right progression, the right check, throwing the ball to the right place. He’s had several times where he threw it to the right place where he made a hell of a play. You don’t want to take that out of the guy. You don’t want to over-coach the guy. And I think (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks) coach (Jim) Chaney does a great job. I sit in some of those meetings and he tells him, ‘Hey this is not really where you’re supposed to do it, but you did a great job.’ So as he earns that, he’ll get a chance hopefully to move up and get a chance with the ones.”

Eason currently sits behind fifth-year senior Greyson Lambert, who played in the starting role for most of the 2015 season, and Brice Ramsey, who ended up doing punting duties for Georgia midway through the 2015 season.

It certainly looks like Jacob Eason has his work cut out for him going into the season this year.
