Since Art Briles’s firing from Baylor last week, the Bears have experienced a large number of players leaving and others asking for releases from their National Letters of Intent. However, it doesn’t seem like the school is willing to work with those players at this point and won’t allow them to get out of those commitments.
FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman reported late Wednesday night that Parrish Cobb, a four-star cornerback who has asked for his release, and his father, Collis, contacted Baylor two days after Briles’ firing.
However, the compliance office said they weren’t willing to grant Cobb’s release.
Cobb is one of six players that have already requested a release from their National Letters of Intent with Baylor. The list also includes J.P. Urquidez, Jared Atkinson, Kameron Martin, Donovan Duvernay and Patrick Hudson and ESPN reports that the team’s top 2016 recruit, Devin Duvernay, is expected to ask for a release soon as well.
Collis Cobb said he got a visit from new Baylor head coach Jim Grobe, who attempted to convince his son to stay. He could only respond by telling him that his son’s mind is made up.
“Right now, we don’t know the status of Baylor’s football program,” Collis Cobb said. “We don’t know if (the current coaching staff) is going be there through 2017 or 2018. No one can give us that information.”
Baylor has 30 days to respond to the players’ requests for release before it actually becomes official. However, during that period, players, including Parrish Cobb, cannot have any contact with other schools.
If the players don’t want to be at the school anymore and there has been a major change, like the head coach being fired, players are allowed to get out of their commitments. It just looks like the school is trying to save face and their football program by trying to convince these players to rethink their decision.
Honestly, this just makes the school look even worse for the future.
