2016 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game Sees Significant Audience Increase
Earlier this week, the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s and women’s lacrosse teams brought home the national championship from their respect NCAA tournaments. The men’s game was a thriller with an overtime goal settling the score and it appears as though the quality of the game was greatly appreciated.
According to a release from ESPN on Thursday, there was “a significant audience increase on both ESPN2 and WatchESPN compared to the same event last season.”
Per the report, the Maryland vs. North Carolina men’s final averaged 476,000 television viewers, a 43 percent increase from a season ago.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, the improvements on the digital networks were even greater.
The title game saw a 171 percent increase in total minutes, 131 percent increase in average minute audience, and a 96 percent increase in unique viewers over last season’s game.
Don’t look now, but the popularity of lacrosse is certainly trending in the right direction.
