The Alabama Crimson Tide seem to have all the pieces to contend for a national championship again this season, but there is one gaping hole right now: quarterback. However, some of the players don’t seem to care what much of the media thinks and only listen to head coach Nick Saban’s opinion on the situation in Tuscaloosa.
Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen joined Saban in Hoover, Alabama for the SEC Media Days and on Wednesday, he had a chance to speak with reporters. He said that if Saban is confident in their quarterback, whoever it may be, then the rest of the team will be as well.
“Right now we don’t know who’s going to be the quarterback, and I play defensive line, so I definitely don’t know,” Allen told reporters gathered for Day 3 of the SEC Media Days.
“But whoever the quarterback is, if coach Saban has trust in them, then I have 100 percent trust in them. I have no doubt that coach Saban is going to make the best decision for this team.”
Four quarterbacks, including Cooper Bateman and four-star signee Jalen Hurts, are vying for the starting job and any one of them have a shot at taking over the reins. Whoever it is, it seems one of their best offensive weapons is ready to see what they can do.
“I think each quarterback is doing a great job right now, of doing what the coaches are asking them to do,” senior tight end O.J. Howard said Wednesday. “Each guy is doing good right now. I think we’ll be fine. Each year, the past three seasons, we’ve had a new quarterback. We’re in the same shoes. We’ve been fine those years, so I think we’ll be fine again this year.”
The team enters the 2016 season with a different starting quarterback for the fourth straight time, but they will certainly be able to acclimate to the new guy behind center. The Crimson Tide opens the year in AT&T Stadium against USC on Sept. 3.
